Oppo will present the Reno6 series in India next week, and prior to launch, we spoke with Mr. Tasleem Arif – Vice President and Head of R&D at Oppo India – to learn more about the Reno Glow design used to manufacture the Reno6 Pro 5G, roll-up smartphones, and the company’s future plans. What were the main challenges in developing the Reno Glow?
Oppo’s exclusive Reno Glow effect has been a central part of the overall design of the Reno series and has evolved with the series with each iteration. The Reno Glow design was first introduced on the Reno5 Pro 5G, where it brought a subtle glittering finish to the anti-reflective glass thanks to Oppo’s unique engraving technique. On the all-new Reno6 series, Oppo’s exclusive Reno Glow effect has been enhanced to make it even brighter and sparkling.
Now, for the first time on the most anticipated Reno6 series, all available colors in the series are decorated with the sparkling Reno Glow effect, including aurora and Stellar Black color finishes. Through a manufacturing process that takes more than 14 hours, the phone’s glass back cover is created to achieve two seemingly paradoxical properties of Oppo’s exclusive Reno Glow effect: a matte texture and a glossy appearance.
The complete manufacturing process involves about 50 complex steps, including glass cutting, 3D forming, ion exchange, etching and more. Of these steps, engraving is one of the most crucial to creating the desired properties of Oppo’s exclusive Reno Glow. Several variables must be controlled during the process, such as the angle, temperature and immersion time of the glass in the exclusive etching solution.
Meanwhile, most steps in the manufacturing process must be carried out in a completely dust-free space, with manual checks performed on each piece of glass between each step to ensure the high quality of the glass back shell. For example, to check the complete and uniform coverage of the coating, the glass is sprayed with a solution of mist and examined to see how the droplets gather on the surface. If the coating was applied correctly, the water droplets appear finely on the surface.
Why did you decide to introduce the Glow with the Reno6 series rather than a flagship of, say, the Find X family?
Innovation has been key to Oppo’s growth history and our Reno series has been a testament to our innovation-driven approach. The Reno series is known for its rich and long heritage of mastering innovation with features unheard of in the industry. The Reno series has always been a favorite among millions of our users around the world.
Since the introduction of the innovative Reno Glow process on the Reno5 Pro 5G, the unique design language that the Oppo Reno series has constantly matured allows the series to establish a special niche among consumers. With the Reno6 series as well, we tried to create the same high-end design for which the series is known. With the upcoming Reno6 series devices, we aim to achieve leadership in the high-end device category.
Does the new finish have an impact on durability, whether it is more or less resistant to scratches or breakage?
Reno Glow not only gives the phone its high-end feel and spectacular appearance, but also helps provide the Reno series with the comfortable and carefree feel it is known for, with the fingerprint and stain resistance properties enabled by Reno Glow on all Reno6 series products. Thin and light are two other properties offered by all Reno smartphones. On the Reno6 series, Oppo sought to find an optimal weight/thickness balance that better matches users’ habits. With more than 20 patents filed worldwide, Oppo’s exclusive Reno Glow process is at the heart of the appeal of the Reno6 series design as it creates a subtle shimmering effect on the anti-dazzling glass while making it fingerprint resistant.
Previously, Oppo was very keen to experiment with bold designs with moving parts such as those in the Find X or Oppo N series at the time. Have these been abandoned due to inefficient use of internal space, sustainability issues, manufacturing costs or something else? Is this a closed chapter for you, or can we expect to see more in the future?
At Oppo, we believe that for a design to be exceptional, it must meet three different levels of criteria. The first and most fundamental of these is that design must attract people – through attractive colors and unique shapes or shapes. Secondly, the design must satisfy the needs of users when it comes to providing a comfortable user experience throughout the life of the product. And finally, once these two conditions are met, the design must then bring additional value to its owners – a value that makes them excited every time they interact with the product, and feel strengthened by the value brought by the brand.
A thin, lightweight and high-end body is a basic feature on all products in the Reno6 series. To guarantee them, Oppo has continuously optimized the use of the components and their arrangement within the device to obtain a thickness and weight allowing for a better portable experience and an overall user experience. The result of all these improvements is a series of devices that can be easily held with one hand, can fit comfortably into a pocket and can be used for long periods without getting tired. Based on technological research and consumer surveys, Oppo has identified a range of 7.0 to 8.0 mm as the optimal thickness to deliver a better user experience on smartphones. Meanwhile, a weight of about 175 g is considered an ideal weight, giving the user an impression of high quality and durability when holding it in his hand, without overloading it by being too heavy or accidentally dropping the phone.
For Oppo, a smartphone is no longer just a tool. Instead, he became a companion for people, helping us record every moment of our daily lives. It’s more like a friend, who is young, imaginative and passionate about life. Therefore, we want to give our products emotions, thus allowing users to express themselves in a natural and true way.
With the inclusion of OnePlus under the Oppo brand, can we expect to see Glow finishes on OnePlus phones?

How much do you think people care about design when choosing their next phone? With almost everyone using cases these days, do you think it’s a little sad that all these exciting developments are being wasted a bit when most people don’t see them much?
Smartphones are more than just a projection of our personalities; it is an extension of what we represent and what we want to convey. Therefore, the design of the smartphone plays a huge role in reducing the one to buy. And we’ve seen a lot of experiments going on in terms of look and feel, with all sorts of materials and finishes to ensure that the smartphone design catches attention. Over the years, we have designed and developed stunning smartphones that seamlessly combine humanity and technology.
It’s true that technical features and functionality play a critical role in how people perceive a smartphone, but the design – of color, material, finish and shape – a phenomenal design is also capable of creating a refreshing first impression towards the product. as a lasting link, between the user and his phone.
Many levels of design have always been the guiding force of our approach to the popular Reno series of smartphones, combining innovative technology with trendy designs to refresh the consumer experience in every generation. “Slim”, “light”, “Shiny” and “gradient” are all design identifiers that are immediately reminiscent of the Reno series.
Looking to the future, Oppo continues its efforts to constantly improve the Reno Glow process, introducing a more creative visual appeal at the base of its matte and glittering appearance. With all these upgrades, the Design Language of the Reno Series will continue to be passed on to future generations of devices, incorporating more innovative advances with basic design features to create a better user experience through design.
Last but not least, another trend in design: how is the development of Oppo foldable phones going? Can we expect to see anything on the market this year?

Also, where do you stand on the vertical fold, horizontal fold, and roll-up phone debate – do you have any favorites that you think will benefit users more than others?
Compared to foldable screens of fixed sizes, roll-up screens are infinitely adjustable between their minimum and maximum sizes, opening up more possibilities for productivity, entertainment and daily use.
Roll-up device technologies will be the trends of tomorrow. The roll-up screen is an amazing concept also because it gives the user the freedom to choose the screen size he wants and not depend only on 1 or 2 sizes. This means that users only have to tap on a video and the phone to automatically adjust the screen size based on the aspect ratio, providing a full-screen viewing experience at all times. Alternatively, when reading an e-book or editing a document, the larger size provides a more enjoyable reading experience. Meanwhile, message pop-ups that appear during the game can also present the full message without interrupting the game screen.
Oppo introduced 125W flash charging technology last year. When can we expect it to arrive in India and other markets?
Oppo always strives to provide newly upgraded technologies and products to its customers as soon as possible. However, we have the highest standards for all our products and will only launch them when they are completely ready. We will share updates when we have a schedule for commercial use.
Is there anything you would like to say to our readers?
Oppo Reno6 Pro and Reno6 will be launched in India with two distinct color variants, Aurora and Stellar Black. Both feature humanistic design for a smooth and immersive experience while offering high-end design and appeal.
Both devices deal with technology that uses the crystalline drilling technique to create millions of pyramid-shaped crystal structures at a microscopic level with the Diamond Spectrum body which is the combination of five basic elements. The new Aurora color could shine a million colors while standing from different angles. The overall texture of the material has been improved (decreased surface roughness) by 30% to give the glass a smoother, fresher and more delicate touch. On a hot summer day, users will be able to feel fresh and refreshed when they hold the phone in their hands.
Aurora, which is created using an improved version of the Oppo-exclusive Diamond Spectrum process that sits under the Reno Glow on the back cover of the phone. Thanks to its special properties unique to this color – the Diamond Spectrum, it creates a constantly changing color effect when viewed from different angles and under different lights, which is further enhanced by the crystal clear brilliance of the Reno Glow effect. Black has been a fan favorite and oppo’s exclusive Reno Glow effect makes it a high-end product and a design scientist appreciated by consumers.
