In 2015, we published the Battle of Fast Chargers, our first test of fast charging technologies. At the time, a typical USB brick only delivered 5 W, and the most powerful charger tested exceeded 25 W. Let us just say that things have progressed since then.
The fastest charging system we’ve reviewed belongs to the Black Shark 4, whose 120W power brick pumps 120W and can completely fill the 4,500 mAh battery in 19 minutes.
The Infinix Concept Phone 2021 introduces the Ultra Flash 160W charging system
We now have in our hands a concept device that promises to reduce charging time by almost half – the 2021 Infinix Concept Phone comes with a 160W Ultra Flash Charge power brick that aims to fill the 4,000 mAh battery in just 10 minutes, while observing strict safety protocols.
Yes, the battery has a slightly lower capacity, but it also has a different internal structure – it’s an 8C battery. We’re not going to dig too deep now, but the C-rate numbers indicate the maximum amperage at which you can charge or discharge a battery.
And the power supply produces a little amperage, it caps at 20 V and 8 A to reach the maximum of 160 W of power. We call it a brick, but the feeder itself uses GaN (gallium nitride) and SiC (silicon carbide) components that make it compact enough for its output. It weighs less than 200 g, which is much less than a typical 100+ Watt class laptop charger. This Infinix charger supports multiple protocols, so it can also charge laptops.

The Infinix Concept Phone is also a demo vehicle for a few other technologies the company is working on. One is immediately visible when you plug in the phone – a line of green light connects the USB-C port and the circle in the middle of the “NOW” stencil on the back. It vibrates while the phone charges.
This is a piece of light emitting film that can serve as an interesting alternative to the notification LEDs now mostly turned off. It is thin, but covers a large part of the back, much larger than what can easily be covered with traditional LEDs.
The phone can undergo another visual transformation thanks to the solid electrochromic film. The back of the phone is normally slate gray in color, although it moves slightly when the light hits it from different angles. However, the phone can turn its back on a light blue color.
Infinix has positioned this as a kind of notification system – if you have a missed call, your phone will be blue. In fact, it starts to turn blue as soon as the phone starts ringing.
This phone concept demonstrates the technologies infinix is developing for future products
As the name makes clear, it is a conceptual device, it is a demonstrator of Ultra Flash Charge technology as well as the chameleon. So that’s what we’re going to test: how fast can the battery reach 100% charge?
Although this device is never sold to the public, its charging system could be featured in Infinix’s upcoming flagships. What about the shiny and color-changing back? That too may be, although we do not have any solid information. But we’ll soon be sharing our thoughts and test results with the Infinix Concept Phone 2021.
