Months after its initial launch, the Sony Xperia 1 III is finally available for pre-order. It is expected to start shipping on August 19 in the US and UK, at the end of August in continental Europe (e.g. Amazon Germany has set the launch date for August 25th). And some people have an eye on the flagship Mark 3, but even more so on its price.
Last week’s poll shows that about a fifth of voters are interested in pre-ordering 1 III. They will receive a free pair of WH-1000XM3 (Europe) or WF-1000XM (US) noise-canceling headphones, as well as some additional gifts (depending on the region).
However, an even larger group, a third of voters, will expect a lower price. It may or may not work for them. Sony phones sell in relatively low volumes, so their price is quite stable, both for new units and used phones.
There has been a debate in the comments about the merits of the Xperia 5 III compared to its big brother. As we have noted in our writings and video reviews, this 4K class screen has a few caveats. It is still one of a kind. In addition, if the older generation Mark 2 is an indication, the smaller phone may have the best battery life.
One of Sony’s advantages in terms of design instead of following market trends is that it doesn’t have to launch its products at the same pace as the rest of the industry – for better or for worse, no 2021 phone is quite like the Xperia 1 III.
