Xiaomi is moving forward with its MIUI 12.5 updates, and the latest phone to be equipped with this skin version is the Mi 9 in Europe. This is actually a double celebration for Mi 9 owners, as not only does the phone get MIUI 12.5, but the underlying Android version has also changed from Android 10 to Android 11.
So it’s a big deal, both figuratively and literally – the download is 2.4GB, so if you have a capped data plan, make sure you use Wi-Fi to get it back.
The new version is labeled MIUI V220.127.116.11.RFAEUXM, and as we have already mentioned (and that “EU” in the name clearly indicates), it is intended for Mi 9 units that have been sold on European markets. As you can see from the screenshots of the change log above, the version is labeled “Stable,” but that doesn’t necessarily mean that all Mi 9 units in the wild get it now, as Xiaomi likes to have a very small deployment initially, which of course makes it so that there are no spectacular bugs involved.
If all goes well, a wider rollout should follow in the coming weeks. Of course, if you bought a Mi 9 in Europe, you can always continue to check manually, you may be one of the lucky ones.
The change log itself is basically the same as for all other MIUI 12.5 deployments, mentioning “20 times more rendering power” for the system, “custom device model adjustments” that should speed up any phone, and things like “MIUI has become lighter, faster, and more durable” , whatever it means. You also get the June 2021 security patch level although it’s probably august when all Mi 9 units install this update – but that’s just the sad state of security updates in MIUI-land.
Finally, the Notes app gets a huge update in MIUI 12.5, with support for dynamic layouts, mind maps with complex structures, new tools for doodling and drawing, a new gesture shortcut, and support for snippets.
